ALTERING OBJECTS, IMAGES AND EVENTS:

  1. Deconstructing the thing/event by:

    • removing element or detail:
      • a politician's speech with no sound; a face with no color. (consider active vs. passive role of participant)

    • revealing part of underlying structure:
      • showing part of human skeleton; house with part of blueprint; molecular structure of the hand; or looking into the inside of an object through a peek hole.

    • revealing process:
      • showing object at two different stages of its growth or construction simultaneously, an infant's head on an old man's body.

    • uncovering the process of construction:
      • i.e., the end of Zazie dans le metro, when the walls fall down to reveal the cameras shooting the scene.

  2. Reconstructing the thing/event by:

    • altering the tone and import:
      • a lascivious smirk on a Barbie doll, a menacing toothbrush.

    • changing scale:
      • a huge comb and brush in a normal-sized bathroom.

    • softening or hardening the image, changing its emotional significance:
      • a melted watch; a volcano shot in waltz time and slow-motion; rain filmed at a high shutter-rate.

    • re-packaging the object:
      • a fur-covered teacup.

    • changing the function of the object:
      • walking on your hands, writing with a telephone.

    • ordering pieces:
      • putting picture and sound segments in a sequence; putting pieces of a puzzle together.
