Some Conceptual Considerations:

  • What is the scope of the dream universe? What are its rules and values? What is its map and its iconography? Should it be player-extensible? Should it allow for exceptions?

  • Why would we want to participate?

  • How is activity in a public space defined? the WWW? the pager?

  • What aspect of the narrative can be communicated through each venue?

  • By what media: expressive text, image, sound?

  • What autonomous action types and abilities might characters make use of?

  • What are the specific roles of the players?

  • What combinations of character roles are condusive to good narrative? Which are disasterous?

  • How does a player get to be a player?

  • What modes of interaction can we provide? How do we invite interaction?

  • What kinds of character actions can produce meaningful consequences in the story world?

  • Which iconographical elements cross cultures well? Which do not, and why?

  • What does the adaptive story need to know about the participants?

  • How can the story sense or know the actions of participants?

  • How and when does the participant know that they are affecting the story world by their interaction?

  • What signifies the beginning and the end of the participant experience?

  • What signifies the beginning and the end of the total experience?

  • How can the system ensure that each participant's experience is a satisfying story?
