JUXTAPOSITIONS:

  1. Juxtaposing two dissimilar things:
    • Nonsensical combinations:
      • Cabbages and kings, the walrus and the carpenter.
    • Suggestive combinations:
      • guns and roses, an eye and the stars, a comic scene and a tragic scene.

  2. Placing object in unusual setting:
    • Chain-saw on a bed; altar in a barroom.

  3. Juxtaposing qualities and tones:
    • knife in an eye; peanut butter on marble; or,
    • mixing organic and inorganic: a clock in a human chest.

  4. Mixing real and represented objects:
    • a real body in a shop window, surrounded by mannequins.
