well, this was an interesting shoot. filene's basement kindly allowed me to video in their store, on the condition that a manager shadow my every move as i wandered around. this was for my own safety apparently, as i might get "too into what i was doing and fall over something". this made it somewhat awkward and tricky to do justice to the narrative story, which i think is the real strength of the piece.

third installment. this time, fred talks about a place that doesn't exist anymore. finding it was quite the task, given that the whole area has undergone so much change in the last decade or so.

same building, different memories. andrew recalls rocco's diner and compares it to it's current instantiation.

part one of a series of short movies about people's favorite places. where they go to relax, to think, to wallow, to remember, to forget. i asked people to describe these places: what they look and sound like, why they go there, who they go there with, when they go there and how it makes them feel. following the taped interview, i set out to try and record and represent some of their statements. very simply, i wanted to try and capture some of the essence of what they had said. i intend to show these movies to the original contributers and document their subsequent responses.

for this series of five movies, all the locations are in boston. part one :: sense of place :: traintracks

in an attempt to at least semi-regularly post, i'm adding a video i made a while back, following the supercollision exhibition held here at mit. ben and i made a dreamachine, ala brion gyson, which was really just an excuse for us to play around with the waterjet cutter and the laser cutter and use a rivet gun and cut large pieces of wood on the band saw. seymor papert might advocate "hard learning", whereas ben and i advocate "dangerous learning".

the video supposes some form of narrative about a robot going crazy, hypnotized people and a scary evil controller person(a very unlikely aaron). make of it what you will and blame ben for the metal music.

our next assignment for chris c's class is to make a 30 second movie about love, and a 30 second movie about argument. i shot this using a fish eye lens, hence the dinosaur like arm and other roundy weirdness. i was trying to avoid being preachy, but i guess the text could be construed as so. oh well.
the statistics are courtesy of the american bar association and the music is slowdive's "crazy for you", off the pygmalion album.

the jellyfish exhibition at monterey aquarium is truly mesmerizing. i could have watched these graceful creatures all day as they glided and waltzed around the beautifully lit tank. i've had this footage for ages and wasn't quite sure what to do with it. however, after listening the other day to local field's sublime swing shift album, i thought it might be sweet to have the jellyfish float and move around in time to the music. the featured track is "remark one".

things have been a bit hectic recently, so today's movie comes by proxy. my good pal james made a rather spiffy video for our arts practicum class. his director's cut of his 15 seconds of love goes something like this.

this week we're all about love. 15 seconds of it to be precise. i have a class assignment this week to make a 15 second movie about love. i thought it might be interesting to search google images for the word love and rip out the first 60 returned images or so. then use the same search term looking for audio files on soulseek. mix them all together and voila: love as offered and interpreted by the internet. i guess the whole semantic web thing still has a ways to go...

go patriots. we're number one. horrraaaaay. watching the match game was very exciting indeed, although there were some confusing moments. mariah managed to look not too skanky, u2 were, well, u2ish and the patriots...what can i say? actually, not too much seeing as i know very little about them, but that brady fellow seemed to be useful and your man at the end who kicked the winning score...go him!!

i decided to go along to the parade for the team at boston's city hall, held on the coldest day of winter so far. the noise was incredible although i really couldn't see too much, given the huge crowds. thirty sweet seconds of "atmosphere" for your viewing pleasure.

bringing to a close this particular series of movies, we have a big hair band tribute. and don't try and deny that you didn't bang your head and swing your hair to this at the school disco. altogether now...woooooh....to further relive those memories: real or mp3

well, when you've got a dead horse you might as well run with it. in keeping with this week's theme, i give you more movies from lyrics, except we're getting all cool here. yes folks, the cred rating is rising with today's little gemmy from these dirty boys. wanna hear a snippet of the real thing? real or mp3

change of tone here for this spoken word number. given that this stanza is actually that of the guest vocalist, a hint is in order :: real or mp3

apologies for choosing to ignore the featured artist's contribution here, mighty though that it is. there will be other days. believe me.

name that tune people!! home moviemaking has never been so much fun. some pals unwittingly interpret the work of australia's favorite pixie star. need a clue? real or mp3

recorded using an intel play video camera, i wanted to see if i could make a short little movie in 20 minutes or so. i guess i'm using the term movie loosely, but hey...it was fun
