Subject: A reasoned perspective on "security"

A perspective on the current state of world security

Over the past two years, several issues of Daedalus, Journal of American Academy of Arts and Sciences have been devoted to reflections on the political, economic and social implications of a world after the Cold War. On receiving the Summer 1995 issue, which is devoted to "The Quest for World Order," I gravitated to Emma Rothchild's article "What is Security?" We are all concerned, as we emerge from the bi-polar framework of the Cold War, that accident, acts of terrorism, and acts of national insanity have become increasingly difficult to influence and may eventually become impossible to distinguish. Rothchild's article provides a cogent examination of the concept of "security" as it has changed from the 18th century to today, paying particular attention to current conditions which are leading to a reexamination and dialog about the meaning of security itself. Rothschild's academic analysis provides a rich counter-point to calls for letter writing and other protest techniques. To have any hope of turning power on its ear, one needs to be well informed. Rothchild requires us to think through with her the implication of principles. While Rothschild does not arrive at any unexpected or overly hopeful solutions, she acknowledges an uneasy peace between what exists and where we should be heading. Her prespective provides us with a good example of the clear thinking with which JBW surrounded himself.

The University of South Africa received its first masters thesis on CD-ROM. It was submitted by Louis C Eksteen in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the master's degree in business leadership. The title of his thesis is "The impact of the new media driving force on the consumer magazine industry. " As the subject librarian to the Rectorate, I have arranged to give Prof J A Dockel, Vice Rector for Research, a demonstration of what the thesis looks like and how it works. While clicking on the MIT link I gained direct access to " A random tour of the Twentieth Century. " I found the biograph of Jerome Wiesner very interesting. It has prompted me to find out more about this distinguished man. I also found the lay-out and graphics used in your home page interesting. It is quite different from the usual type of home page. Subject: JBW documents on pre-lunar landing space matters

I am researching alternative proposals made by NASA and contractor engineers/scientists to the LOR (Lunar Orbit Rendezvous) approach which was chosen. Not absurd pipe dreams, but serious ideas from the kind of people JBW communicates with in the letters already included here. Do you have additional files on either lunar or space station topics ? I am VERY interested in any other documents related to the memorandum to Edward Walsh of 5/8/61. Item III refers to one of the least documented of all the approaches to lunar flight. JPL favored Lunar Surface Rendezvous while Langley/Houston backed LOR and Huntsville/MSFC/von Braun pushed for Earth Orbit Rendezvous. The infighting caused considerable delay in the early days after Apollo's goal became lunar landing as opposed to lunar orbit/recon. Also, any references to von Braun would be of interest. My understanding of his relationship with JBW is that they often clashed on policy and did not get along at a personal level. Any help you can provide appreciated. Thanks, ED DEMPSEY

I used to work at Bose. I was abused by the dictatorial policies, the incompetent "old boys" club that runs the joint, and was extremely disappointed to find that this was the norm of operation there. And intellectual property created by me there during my tenure was misappropriated and mishandled by management that was suppose to be protecting me. The managment "club" that runs the place makes sure that they get theirs, (I guess like all big companies) and they get theirs by abusing the people below them. Its too bad that such a successful company is founded on such bankrupt human relations.
