The United States Lawn Tennis Association was formed in 1881, when representatives of thirty-three groups met in New York for that purpose. Newport, Rhode Island, was named as the site of the fist lawn-tennis championship. At this time England's Championship was won by W. Renshaw, a famous name later applied to a tennis stroke he used. Renshaw held the title until 1887, and R.D. Sears was United States champion until 1888.
