![]() From Punch's Pocket Book The United States Lawn Tennis Association was formed in 1881, when representatives of thirty-three groups met in New York for that purpose. Rules were adopted to standardize the size of the ball and the height of the net ... chief bones of contention, and obstacles that had held back the progress of the game. Newport, Rhode Island, was named as the site of the fist lawn-tennis championship. At this time England's Championship was won by W. Renshaw, a famous name later applied to a tennis stroke he used. Renshaw held the title until 1887, and R.D. Sears was United States champion until 1888. |
